500 million EU citizens
The population of the EU27 grew by 2.1 million in 2008 to reach 488.8 million on 1 January 2009. During this year growing at an annual rate of +0.4%, it is set to cross the 500 million mark.
These figures come from a report a published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, on demography in the EU27 Member States, EU Candidate, EFTA and other European countries.
The highest increases were recorded in Lithuania (10.4‰ in 2008 compared with 9.6‰ in 2007), Ireland (16.9‰ compared with 16.2‰), Cyprus (11.6‰ compared with 10.9‰) and Poland (10.9‰ compared with 10.2‰).
The report says that 2008 was the fourth consecutive year when the population of the EU27 saw a net increase. Now it’s anyone’s guess in which country the 500 millionth EU citizens will be born?
