Tove Jansson and the Moomin in Brussels
Until 28 August 2010, the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée in Brussels is hosting an exhibition on the Moomin cartoon characters, imagined by Finnish artist Tove Jansson.
-
All French children born in the 1980’s – and very often their parents as well, have seen (and loved) the Moomin animated cartoons on TV. The stories show the adventures of the Moomin family and their various friends such as the Snork Maiden, Sniff, Snufkin and Fillyjonk. Humour, kindness and a certain “joie de vivre” permeate every story and every book Tove Jansson has created and written.
The first time a Moomin character appeared in one of Ms Jansson’s books was in 1939. The Moomin were published as comic strips in “Ny Tid” from 1947 to 1948 and in the “London Evening News” from 1954 to 1959.
The Tove Jansson Archives in Moominvalley in Tampere, Finland, have lent nearly fifty rare original drawings for the exhibition.
Regrettably there has not been a catalogue of the exhibition put together, but you can buy re-editions of the Moomin comic strip books in French at the boutique of the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée. The Centre is open all days except Mondays, from 10h to 18h.
