Brasserie Cantillon
Using centuries old brewing techniques, the Brasserie Cantillon transports visitors 100 years into the past.
-
The Brasserie Cantillon, located in Anderlecht, is a family brewery that continues to use the same traditional ingredients, tools and processes as when it first opened in 1900.
The Van Roy-Cantillon family make the typically Bruxellois Lambic beer. This beer, which is made from 100% organic wheat, is unique to the area of west Brussels, as it relies on wild bacteria and yeast that only occur in this region. As the beer ferments in oak casks, the carbon dioxide escapes through the wood, leaving still, somewhat sour beer.
The Lambic is used as the basis for fruit beers such as Kriek and Framboise. The Brasserie Cantillon also specialises in Geuze. As with the champagne method, this sparkling beer is made by blending different varieties of Lambic. When the right mixture is achieved, the beer naturally becomes carbonated. As the process is entirely natural, each bottle has a slightly different flavour.
You can learn more about how the different beers are made here .
Visitors to the museum can wander amongst delightful smelling brewing equipment. Some of the red copper barrels are over 100 years old.
If you visit at the right time, you will be able to see the master brewer at work, making sure that the complex chemical reaction is taking place exactly as planned. In summer time, you can have the opportunity to see how fruit beers such as Kriek or Framboise are made.
At the end of the visit, there is always an opportunity to sample a delicious Gueze-Lambic, made in the traditional way, and chat about Belgian beers with the friendly Master Brewer and his family.
Individual visitors are welcome Monday to Friday from 8.30 AM till 5 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM. The visit costs €3.50, which includes one glass of beer. Guided tours for groups can be arranged in French, English or Dutch. Please contact the museum for details.
It is also possible to rent the space for private functions. Catering, which of course includes a selection of beers matched to the menu, can be provided.
